Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. This is a fairly common condition which can occur in men of any age and may result due to hormonal changes, heredity, disease or the use of certain drugs. For many men suffering from this condition, gynecomastia can be very troubling. A man's self confidence can be negatively impacted and he may try to hide his condition by avoiding certain physical activities and even intimacy.
Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts and is generally seen as excess localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue. Male breast reduction is the surgical correction of gynecomastia. You may be a good candidate for male breast reduction if your breast development has stabilized and your condition cannot be corrected through medical treatment, you are in good physical health and of relatively normal weight, you are realistic in your expectations, and you do not smoke or use recreational drugs. Male breast reduction can be performed on adolescents, however it should be noted that additional surgery may be needed in the future if the condition recurs.
Technically known as reduction mammaplasty, male breast reduction surgery reduces the breast size while also flattening and enhancing the contours of the chest. Intravenous sedation or general anesthesia may be used. When excess fatty tissue is the main cause of the gynecomastia, liposuction alone may be an option. When excess glandular tissue and skin are involved, excision techniques are needed. If the gynecomastia is severe and has led to sagging breasts and stretched areolas, the size and position of the areola may be altered to address this. In some cases, both liposuction and excision are performed.
You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your gynecomastia surgery and to stay with you for the first night. Swelling and bruising are common. You will need to wear a special support garment for a period of time during your recovery to help minimize swelling and to support the new contours of the chest. Drainage tubes may be temporarily inserted at the incision sites to collect excess fluid and blood. Any pain that you experience can be minimized with medication. The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent for many men, however weight gain or using certain medications or drugs such as steroids may cause a return of the condition. |
