Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a type of surgical body contouring procedure. This procedure tightens and lifts loose skin of the upper arms for a firmer and more youthful appearance.
As we age and particularly with weight fluctuations, the skin elasticity diminishes. The arm lift is a good procedure for anyone with loose or flabby upper arms. For many, this area of the body can be very challenging to tone with just diet and exercise.
The arm lift is typically performed with general anesthesia and takes approximately two hours to complete. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, an incision will be made on the inner and under surface of the arm, usually in a zigzag pattern. Working through this incision, a triangular or elliptical shaped piece of skin will be removed. If necessary, fat may be suctioned out as well.
Some swelling and bruising can be expected following the arm lift. Patients may also experience some pain which can be minimized with medication. A compression garment will need to be worn on the arms for a period of time to help minimize swelling and to support the new contours of the arms. Most patients are able to return to work after one week, though it will be two to four weeks before exercise and more strenuous activities can be resumed. |
